Is It Better to Make Uniforms Domestically or Source Them Overseas?

The honest trade-off

Neither route is better in the abstract — it depends on quantity, deadline and how many styles the programme covers. Domestic production buys speed, small minimums and easy communication at a higher unit cost. Overseas production buys a lower unit cost and room to scale, paid for with longer lead times, freight and a working relationship that runs in writing across time zones. The comparison that matters is landed cost against a real deadline: a cheaper garment that arrives after the date it was needed, or fails to match the last run, was not cheaper.

Domestic production vs. overseas (China) production

The overseas column uses our confirmed numbers; the domestic column stays qualitative because domestic factories vary too widely for one set of figures.

When domestic production genuinely wins

Three situations belong with a local factory.

First, quantities below the overseas minimum. Our MOQ starts at 100 pcs per style, so a thirty-piece order is simpler and often cheaper made locally, even at a higher unit price.

Second, week-scale deadlines. Sampling takes 7–15 days and bulk production 25–30 days, and freight adds its own weeks depending on destination and method. A uniform needed within days cannot cross an ocean first.

Third, regulated protective clothing. Certified PPE — EN ISO 20471 high-visibility, flame-retardant, arc-flash — needs a specialist manufacturer holding the relevant certifications. We do not make certified protective clothing either; that requirement needs a certified producer whichever route the rest of the programme takes.

When overseas production wins

Overseas production earns back its freight and calendar cost when the order is a programme rather than a single garment.

Multi-style orders — shirts, polos, trousers and outerwear under one logo — benefit from one factory holding one standard across every style. That is how our OEM / ODM projects run: from your tech pack or our blocks, every style is confirmed on a physical sample before bulk cutting.

Logo embroidery at scale is the second case: artwork is digitised once, then stitched identically across the whole run and every later repeat.

The third is planned re-orders. Repeats are made against the sealed sample and approved lab dips, with patterns and embroidery files retained, so next year’s pieces match the ones already on the floor. Reserving fabric from the first run makes small top-ups easier.

De-risking an overseas order

Each risk buyers associate with overseas production has a mechanical answer at our factory in Humen Town, Dongguan, established 2006.

Quality drift: the sample you approve is sealed, and bulk is measured against it through in-line checks and an AQL-style final random inspection before packing. Fabric: AZO-free test reports are available per batch.

Verification: the factory has passed an SGS on-site audit as an Alibaba Verified Supplier and is BSCI-audited. You can verify the factory yourself — a live video tour shows the actual cutting tables, sewing lines and embroidery machines.

Payment: orders can run through Alibaba Trade Assurance, with T/T bank transfer, Western Union and PayPal also accepted, and terms confirmed per order in the quotation. The payment terms and Incoterms guide explains how EXW, FOB and CIF divide responsibility for freight and customs.
