Grading versus scaling

Scaling multiplies every measurement by the same factor, so a coat gets longer as it gets wider and the shoulder slides off the wearer. Grading adjusts each point — chest, shoulder, sleeve, body length, rise — by its own increment, which is what makes a 5XL coat wearable at a stove rather than merely larger. Where a style needs it, the block itself is cut fresh under pattern making rather than stretched from an existing one.

Women’s fit within the same programme

A unisex coat graded down is not a women’s coat — the shoulder, bust and sleeve pitch differ. We keep women’s fit jacket blocks that run inside the same programme as the unisex line: identical fabric, identical colour standard, identical embroidery setup, different pattern. Trousers usually stay unisex, since the elastic waist and loose cut accommodate the range. The programme records which styles carry which block, so a re-order never mixes the two.

Stocking the ends of the curve

Grading solves fit; stock planning solves availability. Kitchen size curves skew large, but the tails matter precisely because they are rare — the one 5XL cook in the brigade notices immediately when nothing fits.
